It is desired that both the minimal images in meta-agl-core on its own, plus the demo platform images in the full AGL-repo tree be buildable against the upstream "master" branches of Yocto Project and other associated layers, with an initial focus on the qemu(x86-64,arm64,arm) reference platforms.  The aim is to do this by repurposing the "next" branches in AGL-repo and the meta-agl-* repositories; they will be used to hold any changes required on top of AGL's master branches, with periodic rebasing to track upstream.
